For Our Sweet Lucy -
When I was 20 weeks pregnant with our third baby, Lucy, we found out she had a mass on her spine. We were quickly referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) and sent to BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) for a fetal MRI. It was a scary and uncertain time, but we were immediately surrounded by the most incredible team of doctors and specialists who guided us through every step.
When Lucy was born, it was confirmed that she had a Type IV sacrococcygeal teratoma — a rare tumor at the base of her tailbone. At just a few days old, she was taken into surgery at BCCH, where the incredible team of surgeons removed both the tumor and her coccyx. Handing over our newborn for major surgery was one of the hardest moments of our lives — but she came through it like a warrior.
The care we received at BC Children’s was beyond anything we could have imagined. They treated Lucy like she was their own, and they took care of us just as much as they took care of her. We will never forget the compassion, skill, and love they showed our family.
Today, Lucy is ONE — happy, thriving, and full of life. She still has follow-up appointments every few months to monitor her health and ensure the tumor doesn’t grow back. Walking back into BC Children’s for those appointments is always a mix of nerves and gratitude — but we know we are in the best hands possible.
We will never be able to repay BC Children’s for saving Lucy’s life, but we do know we can give back. So we’re asking — if you feel moved to donate, it would mean the world to us. Every single dollar goes directly to life-saving surgeries, specialized care, and supporting families through the hardest times of their lives — just like they did for us.
Thank you for supporting Lucy, our family, and a place that will always hold a special place in our hearts. ❤️
With love,
Lucy’s Family
