Ryan Eisenbock

Bocko & Friends Marathon for Music Therapy

I've created this page because I want to make a difference.

I'm inspired by the work of BC Children Hospital Foundation, so I wanted to raise money by fundraising my way.

Please help me help them by giving whatever you can. The more people that know about BC Children Hospital Foundation, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

BMO Marathon - A Life Long Goal

Tuesday 18th Mar
In the summer of 2008, when I was 15, after months of back pain, weight loss and night sweats I noticed a large, golf ball sized growth on my neck. My parents rushed me to BC Children’s Hospital where I was admitted for a CAT scan. After the results came back positive, I underwent a Bone Marrow Biopsy (BMB) in addition to the growth being removed from my neck. A few hours later I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. I spent the next six months receiving Chemotherapy. In January of 2009 I was issued a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately six months later, my cancer came back. I was readmitted to BC Children’s, this time for a much more vigorous round of treatment. I received chemotherapy every day for an entire week, every month. This cycle continued for the next four months, after which I received a Stem Cell Transplant and was placed in isolation. One final round of chemotherapy would follow.

On December 12th 2009, I was released home after 12 days in isolation. Although a step in the right direction, I wasn’t out of the woods yet. Less than a month later I started radiation therapy. In February 2010, after two years of treatment I was finally in remission. I have since continued to have annual check-ups at both BC Children’s Hospital and BC Cancer Agency and am thankful to report 15 years in remission.

As a proud cancer survivor I feel privileged to be able to give back to the facility that saved my life. BC Children’s Hospital holds an incredibly special place in my, my family’s, and my friends’ hearts. Giving back to the Oncology ward is one of my greatest joys in life. Throughout my time in treatment at BC Children’s there was one particular program that brought me immense joy and a sense of normality: music therapy. This program provides music therapy to patients who are in the hospital long-term or have many repeat visits such as the burn program, and the oncology clinic. While going through treatment, I watched the incredible work that the Music Therapy program and Music Therapists brought to patients going through similar battles. It provides an escape and sense of normality for kids who are facing some of the biggest challenges you can imagine. As a fully donor-funded program, our goal is to provide them with much needed funding to keep this amazing program alive. The funding pays for the therapists who work directly with the patients and their families, at the bedside, supporting them through difficult experiences. Funding is needed to allow therapists more hours to meet with more patients.

Over the past 5 years, myself alongside my incredible family and friends have put together three incredible fundraisers in support of the Music Therapy Program. With the support of our amazing community, we have been able raise over $140,000 for the program.

This year I have decided to take on one of my life long goals, in running the BMO Vancouver Marathon. I am running in support of the Music Therapy Program though BC Children's Hospital Foundation. All donations go directly toward helping fund all aspects of the program, from the Music Therapists themselves to the equipment they use. Your continued support of me and my ongoing goal of ensuring that the fantastic work that the program does continues means the world to me.
