Resilience in Action: Meet the Mighty Maverick and his Family

Every child’s journey is unique, but Maverick’s has been nothing short of extraordinary. Born with a rare TPM2 gene mutation, he faces genetic conditions that weaken the brain-to-muscle connection. At just under two years old, Maverick has been diagnosed with both Congenital Myesthenic Syndrome and Nemaline Myopathy, a one-in-a-million combination. Maverick has overcome challenges that most of us will never face — but with an incredible resilience and love for life.

Alongside his family, Maverick has spent most of his life in a whirlwind of hospital visits, while also learning how to navigate a world that wasn’t built with his needs in mind. Through it all, his mom, Melanie, has become an unstoppable advocate for her son while raising his two big sisters and balancing the demands of daily life.

Melanie first learned about the Bats For a Cause tournament during an event held in their hometown, Kelowna BC. It was here that she realized she had found a community ready to rally behind families like hers. Today, she and Maverick are here to share their story, showing that even in the face of the unknown, small acts of kindness and support can make a mighty impact.

Join us as we rally behind Maverick and his family at Bats For a Cause.

You're making a difference for BC Children’s Hospital

We’re on a quest to ensure kids receive the best health care imaginable. 1 million kids across the province—including some of the sickest and most seriously injured, count on the hospital for specialized care they often can't receive anywhere else.

Since its inception in 2008, individuals, teams, corporations, sponsors and many volunteers have helped raise just over $1 MILLION in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your generosity and support over the past 15 years. Join us this year and make a new goal of reaching the $2 million mark quicker!
