About Wigs for Kids

Wigs for Kids BC (W4K BC) helps kids living with cancer, live better.

A proudly volunteer-run organization, W4K BC provides funding to cover the cost of custom-made human-hair wigs for children and teens at BC Children's Hospital who have suffered hair loss due to cancer treatment or other serious illnesses. Donations to W4K BC also help families pay for medications and feeding supplies that are essential for treatment but not covered by their medical plan.

When a child has a serious illness it takes an enormous toll on the entire family–both emotionally and financially. The assistance W4K BC provides makes the family's burden a little lighter so they can focus more of their time and energy on caring for their sick child.

Hello all! Thank you for viewing my fundraising page - it means a lot that you've made it this far and are considering a donation to this worthwhile cause. Cancer is something that touches upon all of us, and this year is especially meaningful to me having recently lost a loved one to cancer.

I worked at BCCH for a year and spent a lot of time on T8, or the Oncology, Hematology, and Bone Marrow Transplant ward where pediatric patients are treated for cancer. In my role, I spoke with families and children, asking them if they were interested in participating in research studies that would hopefully result in improved treatments for future pediatric patients. To say these families are going through a difficult time would be an understatement. Many families relocate to Vancouver from elsewhere in BC for the duration of their treatment, parents take extended absences from work, siblings stay with other relatives or move as well, and patients go through rounds of chemotherapy or other treatments that can last months to years.

Despite all they were going through, the families and patients that I spoke to were often eager to participate in research, with many parents expressing that they wanted to contribute and help future families and children. It was moving to see parents and patients, who were already going through so much, agree to do more for the betterment of others. Often, kids just want to be kids - who get to play with their friends and go to school, instead of patients who need treatment. In fact, I spoke to many pediatric patients who had dreams of watching the Canucks win a Stanley Cup, adopting a pet dog once they went home, and going to the Taylor Swift concert! However, to many children, the loss of their hair from cancer treatment, which is sometimes permanent, inhibits their ability to resume normal activities because they fear being ridiculed due to their lack of hair.

Today, I ask you to consider donating to Wigs for Kids. Wigs for Kids raises money to provide free wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer since 2006. It is run entirely by volunteers and without an overhead cost - so every dollar you donate goes directly towards helping children in BC.
