Introducing The Cycling Initiative: Riding for BC’s Kids

What began as a small group of students with bicycles and a shared goal has grown into a much larger vision. Last year, we founded Wheels for Change at Seaquam Secondary with the belief that something as simple as riding a bike could bring people together and create a meaningful difference. Since then, our riders have completed more than 200 collective kilometres in support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Those first rides showed us what was possible, but they also inspired us to think beyond one school. This year, Wheels for Change is becoming The Cycling Initiative—an independent, youth-led community movement welcoming cyclists of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels. We aim to connect students, adults, families, local businesses and experienced cyclists through a shared commitment to supporting children and families across British Columbia.

For us, cycling represents more than distance. Every kilometre requires effort, consistency and the determination to keep moving forward, even when the road becomes difficult. These qualities reflect the incredible strength shown by children facing serious health challenges, along with the families, healthcare professionals and researchers supporting them. By dedicating our rides to BC’s kids, we hope to transform our time and effort on the road into meaningful support for pediatric care.

Throughout the year, The Cycling Initiative will organize inclusive community rides, individual kilometre challenges and fundraising campaigns. Participants can contribute in different ways—whether by joining a social ride, completing a longer endurance route, volunteering at an event, sponsoring a cyclist, donating or simply sharing our mission with others. You do not need to be an experienced cyclist to become part of the movement.

Every dollar donated translates into one kilometre of collective cycling. As our community grows, so does the distance we commit to ride. A 100-kilometre endurance ride, a 10-kilometre community ride, or a series of shorter rides all contribute toward the same collective goal. Every rider and every kilometre counts, allowing our community to turn donations into tangible action for BC’s kids

Our first 200 kilometres proved that a small group can create real momentum. Now, we are inviting the wider community to help us take the next step. Every new rider, every kilometre completed, every donation and every person who shares our story moves this initiative forward.

Together, we can build a community in motion and help create brighter, healthier futures for BC’s kids.
