THE HEALTH OF BC CHILDREN HISTORY PROJECT
BACKGROUND
In 1990, Dr. Judith Hall was appointed Head of the Department of Pediatrics at UBC and Chief of Pediatrics at BC Children’s Hospital. When she took over the position from Dr. Rob Hill, she asked him if he would take on the task of capturing the history of the department since inception in 1951 when the University of British Columbia established the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Hill took this challenge on with great commitment and in 1997 published “Paediatrics in B.C. – A History, with Particular Emphasis on the UBC Academic Department” capturing the history up to 1995.
Over the subsequent 25 years there have been many advances in the care of children in the province.
The contribution of the hospital and university departments, the maturing of the Children’s Hospital as a provincial resource, the development of the Research Institute, the critical role of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the growth of the professional organizations have been very important contributors to these advances in care. We have an opportunity and even an obligation to capture these contributions and highlight the important successes as well as define the challenges so that we understand the past and perhaps from the past, help frame the future.
WE HOPE YOU WILL JOIN US IN HELPING FUND THIS AMAZING PROJECT.
THE HISTORY PROJECT
The History Project is about elevating the importance of capturing history and ways to present history so that it can contribute to impact as we look to the health of children in the future.
The project will produce a book that will capture advances in newborn, child and youth health and health care from 1995 to 2020. The focus starts with the children and families who needed care and in the process of care contributed to those who next needed care. It will capture the story of the faculty, staff, and students who provided and supported care and it will showcase the programmes that organized and advanced this care, and the institutions that provided the infrastructure for sustainable impact. It will also capture the tireless work of volunteers, whether donors or through commitment of time that strengthened the opportunity for better health and health care for the children and youth of BC.
But, beyond the book we will incorporate modern communication tools to make history more accessible and visible, and we will establish an archival record structure that supports retention and ongoing capture of historical information. Finally, with a degree of fundraising success, we will work to establish a fund that will support history projects of the future.
WHY DONATE?
We want to honour our past – the individuals, teams, and structures that advanced the best care possible for BC’s children and families and to honour those children and families whose care during this period made for a brighter future for those who came after.
Your contribution to the history project will be an important personal statement of the value you place in capturing and learning from history.
