Hawthorne Hawks Race for Our Friends
Students at Hawthorne Elementary School are participating in this year’s RBC Race for the Kids. This fundraising event helps advance medical care for kids across the province by supporting experts at BC Children’s Hospital in their quest to conquer childhood illnesses.
Last year, the Hawthorne Hawks showed their passion and commitment to giving back to BC Children’s Hospital for taking such good care of their friends Tyson (Grade 4), Cooper (Grade 6), and Sarah (Grade 4). The Hawthorne Hawks significantly exceeded their goal of $10,000 to be the top fundraiser for the school category. They showed how mighty small can be and there are no limits to what they can achieve.
In 2019, when Tyson was five years old, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. After two years of chemotherapy treatments at BC Children’s Hospital, Tyson went into remission in August 2021. After only one year into remission, Tyson’s cancer had returned. Oncologists started chemotherapy and concluded that Tyson needed a Bone Marrow Transplant to help reduce the risk of the cancer returning. His big brother, Cooper, stepped up and donated his bone marrow. Tyson and Cooper are now in Grade 4 and Grade 6, and they are doing well. Tyson got to throw out the first pitch at a Vancouver Canadians game, and their family went on a Make-A-Wish trip to Walt Disney World in Florida.
One year ago, Sarah walked into BC Children’s Hospital for a quick eye appointment, and never left. Two brain surgeries, 33 radiation treatments with outpatient chemotherapy, one tonic seizure, six 28 day rounds of heavy inpatient chemotherapy, and countless MRIs, CTs, and blood and platelet transfusions, Sarah walked out of T8 for the last time on January 19th, 2024. Her body is recovering, and she is working hard with physiotherapy to rebuild her strength. Sarah is going to school for half days. On Valentine’s Day, Sarah hand wrote 28 cards to pass out to her class. The whole family has come so far, but the road isn’t over yet. They are looking forward to so much happening in the summer and some really fun family trips!
