Thank you BCCH!

UPDATE!

After 2 weeks at Teck Acute and 6 weeks at Sunny Hill, Lola was discharged on April 11. She is doing SO well thanks to all the nurses, doctors, therapists and child life therapists. At Sunny Hill Acute rehab, Lola had 3-4 therapists sessions a day, 5 days a week, ranging from PT, OT, SLP and Rec Therapy. Lola had to learn how to walk again and adapt to her hemiplegia (left side body weakness). Day by day her left arm was able to do more and get stronger. We were aware prior to the surgery  that she will be not using her left hand much but she’s already been surprising us in how she’s adapting and her grip is getting stronger every day. Her vision was also impacted but again as resilient as children are, she’s adapting as well. Learning to scan her surroundings better and avoiding those sneaky pylons and ‘wet floor signs’ on the ground.

Lola got to visit Science World for her very first time with the rec team and it was such a magical and memorable day. We honestly created so many positive memories at Sunny Hill that we will never forget.

THANK YOU BC CHILDREN’s HOSPITAL!!

Go Lola Go!

Lola had her first seizure at 4 month old and after numerous tests we learned that she had a stroke in-utero and there is a malformation in her right hemisphere of her brain. Every drug that we tried Lola still had breakthrough seizures and they kept coming back in different forms. Lola had seizures daily, some days even multiple seizures a day.

On February 20, 2024 she had a Functional Hemispherectomy surgery at BC Children's where they disconnected her right brain hemisphere from the left. So far she's been seizure-free, and currently in acute rehab at Sunny Hill Health Centre learning how to adapt to the weakness to her left side of body.

Lola's days are filled with physio, occupational, speech, recreation therapy and a whole lot of play time. Within 2 weeks she's already back on her feet and very eager to run and play all on her own. We will be here til end of April and we're so happy to call this place our second home.

We would like to thank everyone at BC Children's for giving Lola an opportunity to be seizure-free and for surrounding her with love. We would like to give back to this wonderful foundation for everything it's done for my family and for other children who also need the support. And for the nurses and doctors that Lola's bossed around, this is the least our family can do!
