Big strong boy
Last July, Damian Isaiah Unger, joined our family, coming out 4 ½ weeks early, being a “good size” for a premie. He passed his tests and eventually we were discharged, thinking all the stress from before his delivery was gone.
Unfortunately less than a week later we were being admitted back into BC Women’s for Damian’s weight to be monitored. During this visit, he underwent many blood tests, urine samples, and an ultrasound and yet nothing could be seen as to why he wasn’t gaining weight well. We were discharged, hopeful we wouldn’t have to return.
A week later, we had to check in to BCCH emergency room, as Damian was under respiratory distress. It was during this time that an x-ray was ordered and the reason for all of Damian’s issues was found. There was a pseudocyst within his stomach and 2 days later, Damian underwent exploratory abdominal surgery. The surgeon was successful in removing the cyst, fixing an inguinal hernia, and none of Dame’s intestines were compromised, which was a huge relief. It was over the next 3 ½ weeks we watched our determined boy grow stronger and stronger, losing privileges to his hands as he kept pulling on his tubing, and being that "hungry" boy in the end room. Finally on August 22, Damian was discharged and home.
We will forever be changed by this experience and are incredibly grateful for all the wonderful medical staff that took care of our sweet boy.
Your donation to my RBC Race for the Kids fundraising page will help advance care for kids across the province and support experts at BC Children’s Hospital in their quest to conquer childhood illnesses.
