I’m helping kids be mighty
I'm so excited to be fundraising for the BC Children's Hospital Race for the Kids, an annual 5k dedicated to helping children across BC access life saving and life altering medical care.
Children's hospitals have always been an incredibly important cause for me. My brother had significant health complexities growing up and I've seen firsthand how critical high-quality care can be.
In addition to providing top quality care, BC Children's Hospital is also a major research hub, and publishes groundbreaking research every year. Here are my highlights on the amazing work they do:
- BCCH serves almost one million square miles, the largest geographic catchment area of any Children's hospital in North America
- New screening programs have reduced the average age of diagnosis for Cerebral Palsy from 24 months to just 9 months
- BCCH researchers developed a simple blood test to detect chronic graft-versus-host disease, an often fatal condition that can affect kids after receiving bone marrow transplants
- An app developed by BCCH researchers allows for continuous health data monitoring for children in rural and remote areas, rather than only collecting snapshots of this data at appointments that can be difficult to travel to
And if you're more of a numerical person, here are some stats on the 2024/2025 year at BC Children's Hospital:
- 146000 outpatient cancer appointments
- 47000 emergency room visits
- 15000 outpatient and virtual visits for mental health care
- 9000 surgeries performed
- 4600 music therapy sessions
- 19 clinical trials launched
- 26 new genetic variants discovered
