I'm running to support kids in my community
Hi! My name is Natalie Werner. I'll be running on Sunday June 7 to raise awareness of mental health.
There are many kids and teenagers who struggle with anxiety and depression these days. Sometimes young people find it hard to express their feelings and frustrations, especially if they feel ashamed to admit they are struggling. School can be profoundly stressful, with demanding course loads, social pressures, and expectations to look, act or perform a certain way. Social media can have a profound effect on one's sense of self.
There are also serious stresses that can affect children as much as their parents and community at large- such as ongoing international conflicts, the cost of living, difficulty getting a job, global warming, the financial stresses our families are undergoing.
This past year, Grade 11, has been challenging for me. I was fortunate to have supportive family, close friends and access to counseling when I felt overwhelmed. Some children may not have access to these supports. The BC Children's Hospital provides expert medical care, social and emotional support for kids and their families. There is so much that science has yet to learn about diagnosing and treating mental illness. Please join me in supporting this important work at the BCCH. Thank you!

Keep up the good work. Unc Anthony
