Team Lola the Brave

At 4 months old, Lola had her first seizure. We rushed her to BC Children’s Hospital, where she received a diagnosis that wrenched our hearts: epilepsy, triggered by a malformation on the right side of her brain. Lola’s care team helped keep our family going, navigating daily seizures and the difficult realization that her form of epilepsy was resistant to medication. The entire time, Lola never let her unique form of epilepsy dull her spirit. Her care team believed in a better future for her. So at 4 years old, Lola received a functional hemispherectomy

to disconnect the left part of her brain from her right in February 2024. We spent 3 months at Sunny Hill Acute Rehabilitation having Lola relearn how to walk, talk and adapt to her hemiparesis. 

It's been a bit over a year and Lola is in kindergarten and THRIVING. She does brazilian Jiu-jitsu, tae kwon do, swims and does daily performances, singing and dancing her heart out. It has not been an easy path to adapt to her new body, but being seizure-free has been the biggest relief. Her infectious positive energy brings everyone so much joy.
